Academic Reception of My Work (selection)

Book: In The Name of Social Democracy (London, Verso, 2002).

“This book is one of the most important contributions to the history of the post-war European left to be published in the last two dozen years. The French educated Greek political scientist furnishes a study that is truly groundbreaking”
Gerd-Rainer Horn, International Labor and Working Class History, 64, Fall 2003, p. 169.

“An impressive and thorough account of the nature, history and impact of social democracy that focuses upon the emergence of "new social democracy"”
Andrew Heywood, Political Ideologies, Palgrave Macmillan, Third edition, 2003, p.154.

“Moschonas makes a powerful case that on the basis of the critical criteria he identifies, social democracy has indeed undergone a “great transformation”. By extensively laying out the nature and extent of this transformation, In the Name of Social Democracy nicely complements other broad surveys of the movement”
Sheri Berman, Perspectives on Politics, March 2003, no 1, p. 216

“Very likely the best analysis of social democracy anyone has put together. A must-read!”
Dennis Pilon, Canadian Dimension, January 2005.

“In the Name of Social Democracy is a well-argued book […]. It skillfully weaves most of the main lines of the social democratic saga together in a reasoned and eloquent prose, making it an indispensable reference for all those investigating the nature of change in one of the most important party families in Europe”
Robert Ladrech, Party Politics, 9 (4), 2003, p. 532.

“If I have raised questions, emphasized different perspectives and attempted to see the problem through a different pair of lenses, this is not meant to take anything away from the tremendous achievement of both authors. [...] They are both informative, intellectually stimulating and argumentative in the best of all academic traditions”.
Stefan Berger, Labour History Review, Vol.69, No 1, April 2004, p. 401['Nothing but doom and Gloom in the House of Social democracy?' Review Essay, including  In the Name of Social Democracy and Noel Thompson's Left in the Wilderness, London Acumen, 2002].

“The impasse of socialist policies across the West has yielded a great number of important reflections on the course of working class politics over the twentieth century. The most notable of these, Donald Sassoon’s One Hundred Years of Socialism, Leo Panitch and Colin Leys’s The End of Parliamentary Socialism and Gerassimos Moschonas’s In the Name of Social Democracy […..]”
Gregory Albo, American Review of Canadian Studies, 2002, December

"... un livre original aux conclusions inédites [...] son apport à la compréhension du phénomène partisan est majeur' ".
Cyril Gispert, Revue Internationale de Politique Comparée, Vol. 11, no 4, 2004, p. 643.

'[.....] this is a broad and vital work on the present transformation of social democracy'
Murray Cooke, Millennium Journal of International Studies, Vol. 32, no 1 (2003):149.

“This volume demonstrates excellent scholarship and a thorough analysis of a wide variety of different sources”
Dimitris Christopoulos, Political Studies Review, vol. 1, no 1, January. 2003

“… an excellent study”
Jenny Andersson, The Library and the Workshop, Social democracy and Capitalism in the Knowledge Age, Stanford Univ. Press, 2010, p. 11.

“For those seriously interested in the politics of the Left, I would highly recommend reading Gerassimos Moschonas’s widely praised study”
John W. Warnock, Briarpatch Magazine, Vol. 34, No 5, August 2005.

Book: La social-démocratie, de 1945 à nos jours (Paris, Montchrestien, 1994)

"This excellent book by a Greek scholar working in Crete, although shorter in length, rivals Merkel’s study in quality and range”
Perry Anderson, in P. Anderson,  P. Camiller (eds), Mapping the West European Left, London, Verso, 1994, pp. 11-12.

"Remarquable analyse, la meilleure que j'ai lue de la crise des partis socialistes. La politique est née en Grèce. Elle y est toujours, on le voit, en grand honneur!"
Henri Pequignot, Vie Sociale, no 5, 1994, p.429.

"Lecteurs/trices, attention! Derrière ce petit livre aux allures d’ouvrage de vulgarisation ou de synthèse pour étudiants pressés se cache un essai original, dense et soigneusement argumenté sur ce qui constitue le courant dominant de la gauche européenne. […] l’auteur propose un véritable concept de social-démocratie et en déploie les effets au cours d’une démonstration rigoureuse et richement documentée".
Eustache Kouvelakis, Actuel Marx, no 22, 1997,  pp. 210-211.
