Intensive seminar on Critical Discourse Studies

The Greek Politics Specialist Group (GPSG) of the UK’s Political Studies Association and the Centre for Political Research, Panteion University are co-organising a two-day intensive seminar from 30th November – 1st December on research methods. The course is designed to help doctoral and advanced postgraduate students to develop their research skills in research methods and more specifically on critical discourse analysis.

Στις 5 Οκτωβρίου η aboutpeople και η cloud7, σε συνεργασία με το Κέντρο Πολιτικών Ερευνών του Παντειου Πανεπιστημίου, διοργανώνουμε ένα διαδικτυακό συνέδριο με θέμα τις προεδρικές εκλογές στις ΗΠΑ. Διάλεξη Αντώνη Α. Έλληνα, Πέμπτη 12 Δεκεμβρίου, ώρα 18:00, ΕΚΚΕ, Κρατίνου 9 και Αθηνάς, Πλατεία Κοτζιά. Συνδιοργάνωση του Κέντρου Πολιτικών Ερευνών του Παντείου Πανεπιστημίου και του Εσωτερικού Σεμιναρίου του Εθνικού Κέντρου Κοινωνικών Ερευνών. 

Η ομιλία επικεντρώνεται στην πρόσφατη εμπειρία της Νότιας Ευρώπης και κυρίως της Ελλάδας για να αναλύσει την κρίση που φαίνεται να υπάρχει στη φιλελεύθερη δημοκρατία τα τελευταία χρόνια.  Παρά τις απαισιόδοξες προβλέψεις για την πορεία της Δημοκρατίας λόγω της οικονομικής κρίσης και της ανόδου του λαϊκισμού και του εξτρεμισμού, η Δημοκρατία στη Νότια Ευρώπη δείχνει να έχει σημαντικές αντοχές.  

Στην ομιλία θα αναλυθούν οι πιθανοί λόγοι για τη διαφαινόμενη ανθεκτικότητα της Δημοκρατίας και τις προκλήσεις που εξακολουθεί να αντιμετωπίζει. Εξετάζει πως η περίπτωση της Νότιας Ευρώπης και της Ελλάδας μπορεί να εμβολιάσει την ευρύτερη συζήτηση που αναπτύσσεται για την κάμψη, παλινδρόμηση ή συρρίκνωση της Δημοκρατίας στον κόσμο.

Βιογραφικό:

Ο Αντώνης Έλληνας είναι αναπληρωτής καθηγητής και πρόεδρος τοy Τμήματος Κοινωνικών και Πολιτικών Επιστημών του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου. Είναι επιστημονικός επιμελητής του Journal of Modern Greek Studies (Johns Hopkins University Press) και συγγραφέας των βιβλίων Organizing against Democracy (2020), The European Commission and Bureaucratic Autonomy (2012) και The Media and the Far Right (2010).

Άρθρα του έχουν δημοσιευτεί σε περιοδικά όπως  Comparative Politics, West European Politics, South European Society and Politics, Party Politics, Journal of European Public Policy, Journal of Common Market Studies και Political Psychology.

The Greek Politics Specialist Group (GPSG) of the UK’s Political Studies Association and the Centre for Political Research, Panteion University are co-organising a three-day intensive seminar from the 8^th until the 10^th of January on research methods. The course is designed to help doctoral and advanced postgraduate students to develop their research skills in research methods and more specifically on analysing text and discourse. The course will follow an analytical approach in order to explore political issues and help participants interested in language and discourse to develop a clear understanding on how to implement key approaches and tools in order to extrapolate the role language plays in social reality. More specifically methods that will be explored are content and discourse analysis. Because much is learned by doing, this course has a significant ‘hands-on’ component. The required readings of the course consist of peer-reviewed journal articles and selected chapters from the textbook. We will read both theoretical articles on qualitative methodology and empirical articles in which such methods are employed.

At the end of the course, students should have improved their understanding of and ability to assess the debate over the appropriate use of text analysis in political science, as well as their ability to carry out qualitative research.

Τhe Centre for Political Research of Panteion University in collaboration with the Greek Politics Specialist Group (GPSG) of the UK's Political Studies Association are co-organizing a two-day intensive seminar delving into theory, methods and techniques of experimental research in Social Sciences. During the last years, experiments have been developing into a fundamental and innovative methodological tool in Social Sciences. This seminar will offer the opportunity to doctoral students and advanced postgraduate students to acquire or deepen their knowledge of conceptual and empirical perspectives related to experimental research by focusing particularly on the field of Political Science. Which steps should be followed in order to create an experimental research design? Why are the concepts of causality and validity significant for an experimental design? Are there different kinds of experiments? These are a few of the substantive queries which will be covered and discussed through the theoretical and lab sessions of this seminar.

The University of Sheffield, the University of Exeter and the Centre for Political Research of Panteion University are co-organizing an intensive, one-week seminar delving into methodological issues in research for social movements. The seminar is intended for postgraduate students and PhD candidates at advanced stages of their postgraduate research. The interdisciplinary seminar will bring together scholars from history, political science, sociology and communication to debate on major approaches in the research on social movements.  The seminar includes a four-day course on theories and methods. The last day will comprise of a keynote and a roundtable, aiming to discuss the future in the field and to offer advice on how to get published from distinguished academics. It will be hosted by the Centre for Political Research and taught in English and Greek.
